Evanston, IL: The Library of Living Philosophers, 1949. Hardcover. 8vo . Signed by previous owner, S. Chandrasekhar, and dated January 1950. Chandrasekhar was a prominent astrophysicist and winner of the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physics. This book was obtained by Chandrasekhar during his time at Wisconsin's Yerkes Observatory ("Yerkes" is noted beneath Mr. Chandrasekhar's signature). 1949 editorial cartoon about Einstein glued to front paste-down. Chandrasekhar has taken special note of the passage on page 17 which reads: "[T]he approach to a more profound knowledge of the basic principles of physics is tied up with the most intricate mathematical methods. This dawned upon me only gradually after years of independent scientific work." This is significant in light of astronomer R. J. Tayler's description of Chandrasekhar: "Chandrasekhar was a classical applied mathematician whose research was primarily applied in astronomy." . The Library of Living Philosophers Volume VII.
